Yarrowee River Community Planting

The Yarrowee Trail continues to be our major project and we would love to have as many hands on deck as possible, especially fellow community groups and users of the Yarrowee Trail.

We have made great progress over several years, planting well over 7,000 grasses, ground cover and understory plants in this iconic and favourite stretch of the Yarrowee River and Trail . It is the small forested loop of the river just north of the Ballarat Bypass in Brown Hill. It is one of the few, and certainly the largest tract of remnant native vegetation along the whole river and for that reason is a very special place with a highly diverse population of small birds.

The tree canopy is largely intact, however the original shrub layer is missing and the native ground cover has become patchy over the years. We are replacing these missing layers and providing additional vital shelter, nesting sites and food sources for many of the small bird species.

We look forward to joining forces with you on this special project. To contribute please ring Andrew (0419 091 601).

Wattle Flat Pootilla Landcare Group

The group is represented on the committees of the Leigh Catchment Group, the Ballarat Region Gorse Task Force, and the Mount Buninyong Management Committee. It has a weed management strategy for the control of Gorse, Blackberry, Cape Broom, and Hemlock, developed in 1995, and is working to increase public awareness and on-ground works for weed control as there are very large infestations of Gorse and Blackberry in the local area. There are many roadsides with significant remnant vegetation within the district which have now been signposted to help protect them from grazing and timber removal.

The group's catchment strategy was developed in 1998. It addresses water quality issues for the whole area and in particular Williamson's Creek and Back Creek. Work on fencing streamsides, protecting remnant vegetation and revegetation is a priority. The group is also involved with control of pest animals such as rabbits and foxes.

The Young Landcare Project at the Scotsburn site of the Buninyong Primary School is a direct initiative of the group. Children from both Scotsburn and Buninyong use the facilities to grow indigenous trees and shrubs, plant at local revegetation sites, build nesting boxes and participate in many other environmental activities.

As an on-going commitment to landholder education, the group provides the community with interesting guest speakers to promote many other Landcare issues including sustainable land management, pasture quality, fertilisers, and plant identification.

The group meets bi-monthly on the second Thursday of even months at Scotsburn Hall, 7.30pm.

GREENDALEWOMBATWe are a new group, formed in 2013, and our aim is to protect our farm environment from weed invasion, and to enhance  the soils for sustainable land-use.

We need to hear from landowners and residents in our area, which extends from the Wombat State Forest (north), the Ballan – Daylesford Road (west), Western Highway (south), and the Greendale-Blackwood Road (east).

We meet each month on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm at the Greendale CFA shed. Come along and join us.

We have two projects under consideration -

  1. a community approach to blackberry control in the Blakeville - Colbrook area,
  2. a regeneration project around Greendale to replace trees that are dying.

If you wish to get involved then contact Ian or Anneke Roberts on 5368 1940 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Lal Lal logo LALLALLal Lal Catchment Landcare Group mainly works on weed control on local reserves and roadsides to prevent weed invasion on private land from public areas.  The Group is responsible for six reserves and the main weed problems include gorse and blackberries, with patches of English broom and Spanish Heath.

A corridor of appropriate native trees from Mt Buninyong to Mt Warrenheip would greatly assist koalas to migrate through the region.  The Group has joined with the Upper Williamsons Creek Landcare Group to create the 'Two Mountains Koala Trail'. At present the group is seeking interest from landholders who would be prepared to plant some trees as koala feed and refuge.

We are also assisting the Landcare Network deliver a project on gorse control, funded by the Victorian Gorse Task Force

The Lal Lal Landcare Group welcomes new members and visitors. Contact Secretary Phil Kinghorn on 0429 347 935 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
